Mattson to run against Entenza in DFL attorney general primary

ST. PAUL — A St. Paul attorney says she will run against state Representative Matt Entenza for the D-F-L nomination for attorney general of Minnesota.

Jennifer Mattson says she is challenging the party's endorsed candidate because he hired a Chicago firm to investigate the current attorney general, Mike Hatch, who is running for governor. She also said Entenza faces a conflict of interest if elected because the attorney general is investigating UnitedHealth Group's granting of stock options. Entenza's wife is a UnitedHealth executive.

Jennifer Mattson's grandfather, Robert Mattson, was once attorney general, and her father, Robert Mattson, was state treasurer in the 1980s.

Kare11 -- A Detroit Lakes area soldier was killed in Iraq when a roadside bomb went off near the Humvee he was driving, relatives said Sunday.

Army Spec. Troy Carlin Linden, 22, of Rochert, was killed in Anbar province on Saturday, his siblings said. He had been home on leave just six months earlier, when his family threw him a surprise welcome home party.

The family's farm home east of Detroit Lakes was decorated with flags and ribbons on Sunday as relatives and friends gathered together.

"When we see a flag, we think of Troy," said his brother, Ryan Linden.

as a 2002 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School. He enlisted in the Army in Billings, Mont., where he had moved after graduating, but his siblings described him as a Minnesotan through and through. They said he was a humble all-American who was proud to serve his country.

"I noticed a real change in my brother from the time he went to basic training and then overseas," Ryan Linden said. "For the first time I didn't see him as my little brother, I saw him as a man."

He said his brother, in his phone calls from Iraq, would try to ease their mother's mind by telling her he drove the last truck in the convoy, even when he didn't.

"It was hard to hear his voice over there because we could tell how sad he was because he wanted to be home, but we reassured him that we loved him and how proud we were of him," his brother said.

His sister, Sarah Nelson, also expressed pride.

"I was proud of him the day he joined the service, and I was proud of him every step he took," she said.

Troy Linden's dog, Rusty, has been staying with the relatives.

"He was looking forward to having a dog and coming home and teaching him how to swim, play, taking him Jeeping with him and stuff," his sister said.

Funeral arrangements were pending, but his family said he will be buried in Detroit Lakes, tentatively late next week.

"He'll never be gone, he'll always be a part of us. He'll be with us forever," Nelson said.

Forty-one people with Minnesota ties have died in connection with the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Although Troy was not connected with our son Doug's contingent, D.L. High School is relatively small, so no doubt they knew each other.

My eternal thanks, as well as my condolences, go out to Troy, his family, and his comrades who served with him. May he rest now in GOD's loving arms.

Well, now here's your excuse...

Weight loss can herald dementia

Weight loss can be a sign that a woman will develop dementia in the future, US researchers have discovered.

In a study of over 1,000 people, women who later developed dementia had a drop in weight as early as a decade prior to the onset of memory loss.

The Mayo Clinic team do not think their finding will help doctors spot early dementia but say it could shed light on the brain mechanisms dementia affects.

They presented their work at an Alzheimer's conference in Spain.

U.S. Senate Passes Resolution Reaffirming National Motto: “In God We Trust”

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 14, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – This past Wednesday, July 12, the United States Senate unanimously passed resolution S. Con. Res. 96, which requests senators and all American citizens “To commemorate, celebrate, and reaffirm the national motto of the United States on the 50th anniversary of its formal adoption.”

The passage of the Senate resolution comes only a few days after a California federal trial judge dismissed the lawsuit filed by Michael Newdow challenging the constitutionality of the American national motto, "In God We Trust."

Co-sponsor of the resolution, Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson, in bringing forward the resolution said that part of his motivation for so doing was that it is “important to reaffirm our traditions at a time when there are misguided court challenges to the fundamental principles that have been a part of America since its birth.”

Focus on the Family Chairman James C. Dobson, Ph.D. responded to the passage of the resolution, saying "It is heartening to see the men and women elected to serve the people formally acknowledge once again the true source of the blessings we enjoy as a nation. It has become increasingly distressing to watch activist courts from one coast to the other try to scrub every last vestige of our Christian heritage from the public square -- whether it's ordering Ten Commandments displays out of public buildings or ruling 'under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional.

"Some will say this vote in the Senate is a meaningless symbolic gesture, but what it symbolizes is vital to the future of the United States and all of us who call her home. We will only continue to enjoy the freedoms and greatness that have been our legacy for the last 230 years if we continue to acknowledge the Lord as the creator and protector of our land. We call on the members of the House to follow their colleagues' example and pass this resolution soon.

The phrase “In God We Trust” enjoys a long tradition of use in the United States. One stanza of the Star Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Key in 1814, has a version of the national motto, proclaiming, “In God is our trust!” The phrase, however, did not become the official motto of the United States until much later, when, on July 30, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed H. J. Res. 396 (84th Congress).

Unanimous, eh? It will be something how this plays out if this becomes a campaign issue.

One of the Catholic Church's most controversial figures inflamed public debate in Italy with a typically off-handed comment -- and inadvertently exposed the Vatican's problems in crafting a coherent, comprehensive response to Islamic imperialism.

Cardinal Renato Martino -- the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the Vatican's former ambassador to the United Nations -- said that the Italian government should allow the Koran to be taught during the hour mandated for Catholic religious instruction.

"If there are 100 Muslim children in a school, I don't see why they shouldn't be taught their religion," Martino said in a press conference March 9. "If we said 'no' until we saw equivalent treatment for the Christian minorities in Muslim countries, I would say that we were placing ourselves on their level."

Martino's comments came as campaigning in Italy's April 9 general election entered its final push. Two significant issues are the effect of massive Muslim immigration on Italian society and the ensuing place for government-sponsored Catholic religious education, mandated by the 1929 concordat between the Vatican and Italy that was renewed in 1984.

And here we are, a Catholic Cardinal, in cahoots with the beheaders and the anti-semites:

Two days before Martino's press conference, the president of Italy's largest Muslim group -- the Community of Islamic Organizations in Italy, which controls that country's mosques and has connections to the Muslim Brotherhood -- asked the government to substitute Muslim instruction for Catholic instruction where appropriate.

That president, Mohammed Nour Dachan, also refused to sign a document in which Muslims pledged to accept Italy's constitution (Sharia law, anybody?), denounce terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist. His organization demands Islamic schools, Islamic banks and clerical supervision of textbooks. (surprise, surprise?)

It should be noted, however, that Martino's views are not necessarily in line with the Holy See:

...Enhancing the controversy are remarks Pope Benedict XVI made while greeting Morocco's new ambassador to the Vatican on Feb. 20. During the audience, the pope advocated religious freedom "in a reciprocal manner in all societies," a reference to oppressed Christian minorities in Muslim nations.

How Martino got to be a Cardinal is still beyond me. IMO, he's not fit to be altar boy, and should be excommunicated.

I'll tell you "how Rome will face Mecca" if Martino gets his way--prostrate, with their necks against the edge of a dull blade.

British war ships may head for Lebanon...

To aid in evacuation, two British warships have been given the order to "make ready" and could be on their way to Lebanon within 24 hours, according to the BBC:

HMS Illustrious is currently in Gibraltar

Defence Secretary Des Browne has given orders for HMS Illustrious and HMS Bulwark to "make ready" for operations off Lebanon.

The pair will depart as soon as necessary, possibly within 24 hours.

No order for evacuating UK citizens has yet been given, but ministers and defence staff are considering a plan to evacuate those trapped in Lebanon.

It comes as Israel has stepped up its strikes in Lebanon after Hezbollah militants seized two Israeli soldiers.

'Contingency planning'

HMS Illustrious is currently in Gibraltar and HMS Bulwark is close to Barcelona in Spain.

The decision whether to proceed with an evacuation plan has not yet been taken and no orders have been given.

Marines aboard

BBC defence correspondent Paul Wood has said that 24 hours to get ready for sailing would be considered a "short turnaround" for the two ships.

He said that damage to the airport and port in Beirut meant it would be "difficult to get in".

"Any evacuation would be carried out in concert with other countries, led by the US," he added.

Mr Wood said HMS Bullwark had a contingent of 500 marines, which could be used to make beaches safe in the event of any evacuation.

HMS Illustrious has helicopters and fighter bombers on board, which again could be used to aid any evacuation.

An email from Israel...

I got this thirdhand, so I cannot completely authenticate it, but I am pretty sure it is authentic.

It is 8AM and I just returned from a walk on the beautiful beach near Ramat HaSharon. As usual on a Friday morning, it was full of walkers getting their dose of exercise before the sun gets really hot.

During my walk, my thoughts went to the situation in which we find ourselves. I will talk about the war in a bit but what was uppermost in my mind was the reaction of the world to our plight. That we are hated by some of our neighbors, I have long ago accepted. I really can't understand the irrational hatred spewed forth by the Iranians and even their denial of the Holocaust but, I have chalked it up to their ignorance, jealousy and irrational extremism. But, I cannot and I guess I will never understand the actions of the so called reasonable and cultured developed countries of the world. It was only through another veto of the United States in the UN that we were not condemned for responding excessively to what has been happening in Gaza. France has condemned our actions [Ed, thanks for your letter concerning anti-Semitism in France] as have various representatives of Western European countries and even the whore Putin with his record in Chechnya has the gall to condemn us. I am on the left side of the political spectrum and can assure all that the vast majority of my fellow Israelis want peace with our neighbors and we are willing to give up a lot in order to obtain that peace. We really have nobody with whom to talk. We really have no option but to respond as we have to the killing and kidnapping of our soldiers and to the rain of missiles that are sent over our borders aimed at our civilian populations.

Now what about the war in which we find ourselves? Hamas is clearly being run by Mashal whose headquarters are located in Damascus with the approval of the Syrian regime. He is in coordination with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and they both are armed, funded and take their directions from Iran. The big question in my mind is how far up the food chain do we go and are we able to go. In Gaza, we must deal with Hamas and I am sure that the way that we will do it will be to take out both the military and some of the political leadership. We are now handicapped in our efforts to do so since were we to do so now and especially if we were to go after Mashal or other leaders they would probably kill our kidnapped soldier.

In Lebanon, we must go after the leadership of Hezbollah and again we have to be concerned about the welfare of our kidnapped soldiers there. We also have to rid ourselves of the situation of having the Hezbollah sitting right on our northern border. There is no question in my mind that we have the ability to do all of this and we have to do it quickly before the world limits our ability to do so. The big question is what to do about Iran. Not only do they call the shots in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza but they, with their missiles, present a direct threat to us. The world looks like they will do nothing more than talk about it. Just look at N. Korea which is analogous to the problem of Iran. The N. Koreans have the missile and will soon have the bomb. The countries most threatened by all of this- S. Korea, China and Japan will do nothing. And the United States cannot be expected to take the lead since it is so tied down in Iraq.

Yes, we have some momentous decisions to make and we must make them soon and act on them quickly. I have full confidence that our leaders will make the right decision [despite my lack of confidence in our Minister of Defense] and that our military with be able to deliver. My concern, as always, is the price to be paid by our youth. It is they who will carry the bulk of the burden and it is they who will pay with their lives for me to be able to continue to enjoy my walks along the beach.

Jeffers and Hendrycks will register immediately following, and will be available for interviews afterwards.

Hendrycks is the president of an immigration reform group that advocates for reasonable legal immigration. She is a resident of Hanska, Minnesota, where she lives with her husband, Scott, of 26 years. They have three children. Hendrycks serves in a New Ulm civic organization and has been involved with several professional and volunteer organizations such as the 4-H and Girl Scouts, and is a certified mediator.

Jeffers said she asked Hendrycks to join her because of her passion for helping people, and her firm convictions. "Ruth has tremendous energy and enthusiasm," said Jeffers, "I'm thrilled to have her on the team. We're ready to go to work for the taxpayers."

Hendrycks said she was honored to have been chosen to run with Sue Jeffers. "Not only do I share her points of view," she said, "but I also feel that Minnesotans deserve to have important issues we care about front and center this election year. Regarding sympathy for the devil...

Tony Garcia has a wrap up of the nations that support Isreal's right to defend itself, and the nations (including, regrettably, Vatican City) that don't.

The world's penchant for offering sympathy, aid and comfort to despotic regimes and terrorists never ceases to amaze me.

Why the tolerance for despots? Why the tolerance for oppressors? Why the tolerance for wanton murderers of innocents? Why the tolerance, and even support for pure evil?

Lest we forget, Hezbollah was behind the attacks in Lebanon that killed nearly 250 U.S. Marines, with the largest recorded man-made, non-nuclear blast--ever. Don't ever underestimate the bloodthirstiness of radical Islamists. Yet Israel is not supposed to defend itself against these dirty bastards in nightshirts? Israel is supposed to roll over and let these bastards walk all over them?

Israel was born in a den of snakes hellbent on its destruction since day one. They have survived and will continue to survive, of that I have no doubt.

But what I cannot abide is the world's support--damn--of my own church's support--of purely evil, bloodthirsty zealots who show no compunction against murdering innocents, nor any respect for life. Period.

On racing to the right...

I, along with Mitch Berg and Dan Ochsner, will be a guest on Marty Andrade's and Tony Garcia's radio show, Race to the Right, this Sunday from 1 to 3pm, on AM 1450, KNSI, St. Cloud. We'll be talking about a whole host of issues, including the Hatch v. Entenza debacle, principle vs. party, and WWIII brewing in the middle east.
