Democrats Delay Vote on Alito Nomination
By Susan Jones CNSNews.com Senior Editor January 17, 2006 (CNSNews.com) - As announced last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee was scheduled to meet today -- Tuesday -- to vote on the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court. But it's not going to happen as planned.

Despite protests from Republicans, Democrats on the committee have pushed back the Judiciary Committee vote by one week, to Tuesday, Jan. 24, invoking their right to do so under Senate rules.

The one-week delay is a symbolic gesture intended to convey Democrats' concern about the "rightward" drift of the Supreme Court -- but that's not what Democrats are saying.

In a statement released Monday evening, Sen. Patrick Leahy, the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, explained the one-week delay as an arrangement that "accommodates Republicans and Democrats" who might otherwise have to "rush back to Washington" after the three-day holiday weekend.
But even Tuesday's WaPo, not necessarily a bastion of conservatism, states:
According to Tuesday's Washington Post, Democrats on the Judiciary Committee expect Alito to be confirmed in the end, but they want to delay the final vote as long as possible for political reasons. They want to give President Bush as few days as possible to savor the victory before he delivers his State of the Union speech on Jan. 31, the newspaper said.
Personally, I tend to agree with this:
William Greene, president of the conservative advocacy group RightMarch.com, said liberals "just want more time to muck-rake," despite Judge Alito's "stellar performance" before the Judiciary Committee.
You gotta feel sorry for the dems, raking so much muck, to soil only themselves in the process.

Yep... Must. Feel. Sorry...

Naaaaaaaah!
