Dow passes 11,000, gold at fresh peak, oil falls

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 11,000 for the first time in 4-1/2 years on Monday, while the price of gold hit a 25-year peak above $550 an ounce and oil declined.

The dollar strengthened against the euro and bond prices rose.

U.S. stocks posted a fifth straight day of gains on optimism about the outlook for interest rates and corporate earnings.

The last time the Dow closed above 11,000 was June 7, 2001, when stocks were falling.

Many strategists say breaching the 11,000 mark does not necessarily signal a new trend for stocks but said 11,000 was a psychological milestone, which could boost sentiment.
Word has it that folks who man crisis hotlines may be asked to work overtime in anticipation for heavy usage by democrats.
