Time to take our President to the woodshed..

I have supported Bush on many things, from the Iraq war, to GWOT, to his social security plan that ultimately went south. But there is one issue in which President Bush has been and continues to be extremely weak, and that is immigration.

From giving part of his addresses in Spanish, to cozying up to Vicente Fox, President Bush has been anything but firm in his resolve to address the immigration problem. And today is no exception:

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - President Bush had a blunt message Monday for fellow Republicans focusing only on get-tough immigration policies: He said sending all the nation's estimated 11 million illegal immigrants back to their home countries is not the answer.

"Massive deportation of the people here is unrealistic - it's just not going to work," Bush said. "You know, you can hear people out there hollering it's going to work. It's not going to work."

Perhaps we cannot deport 11 million people here illegally in one feld swoop; but you can help choke off the conditions that led them here in the first place. Like requiring a match between the employee and a valid Social Security number before an employer can deduct wages from taxes. And hitting businesses hard that knowingly hire illegals. Yes, I know that you can't get all of them, but you can hit enough of them hard enough that will make the remaining businesses think twice before they will entertain that kind of action.

Get with the stick, and guard and enforce our borders, Mr. President. As you are so fond of pointing out, we don't live in a pre-9/11 world.
